Sunday: straight up Toute 1 until we hit San Francisco

Amazingly, found this link recently that detailed a lot of our trip:

A Day Along Big Sur Coast

San Simeon:  Toured Hearst Castle– the site of Nona’s famous snub–  Ah, we’ve all heard the story, but were probably unaware that the site of the Hideous Snub was indeed the famous Hearst Castle.

The story goes that F.W. Kellogg and Florence Scripps were attending an exclusive and glamorous dinner party hosted by the elder Hearst.  Mid-way through the first course, all the guests stood and applauded as Hearst’s Mistress, a famous Starlet of that era, came sashaying down the long sweeping spiral staircase and entered the room.  All the guests, that is, with the exception of Florence Scripps!
(This story is told with three different endings, depending on the teller and the wine):

Ending #1: And being a principled and religious woman, Florence remained seated, and as far as we know, the only person ever to do so.
Ending #2: And being a principled and religious woman, Florence had every intention to remain seated, but at the gentle urging of F.W., who reminded her that they were there with intention of selling their paper to Mr. Hearst and it best not to insult him, reluctantly stood.
Ending #3: And being a principled and religious woman, Florence had every intention to remain seated, but at the gentle urging of F.W. who said, “Dang nabbit, Flo!  Get yo’ dainty self up!  I’m eyeing a prime golf course and yacht club in that there La Jolla– we’re getting out of the daily rag business!!!”  And and that– Flo’ busted right up!

Also,

Stopped in the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery and watched these MASSIVE creatures fight for dominance.

Almost took the Naciamento-Fergusson Road cut– road had unsafe grades and was barely wider than the X-5– we quickly turned around when we could and continued up through Big Sur.
